How to Change Screen Resolution

If you find that text or images on your computer are too small or too big, you might want to adjust your screen resolution. Screen resolution is also referred to as screen area.

The effects of adjusting resolution is similar to zooming in and out of a Word document. Increasing screen resolution will make images on the screen smaller. The advantage is that you will be able to fit more items on your screen. This is a plus if you view large or wide screen webpages.

For Windows based Operating Systems:

Step 1: From the Start menu, click Control Panel, or in older versions of windows, select Settings, then click Control Panel. The Control Panel window will appear.

Step 2: Click open the Display icon. The Display Properties window will appear.

Step 3: Choose the Settings tab from the window that appears. (Image below may be different depending on Operating System)

Step 4: Adjust the slider in the screen area to change the resolution. (1024 by 768 is recommended, but 800 by 600 is suitable as well)

Step 5: Click OK. Windows will give you a message telling you it will try to resize your desktop. Click the OK button from the message box.

Congratulations. You are done.

For Mac based Operating Systems:

Step 1: From the Apple menu, select Control Panels. You will either have the option Monitors & Sound or Monitors.

Step 2:
If the option is Monitors & Sound:
  • Open the Monitor icon.
  • From the list of available resolutions, select the resolution you wish to use. (1024 by 768 is recommended, but 800 by 600 is suitable as well) Your screen resolution will change instantly.
  • Close the Monitors and Sound window.
If the option is Monitors:
  • Ensure that the Show pull-down menu option is set to Recommended.
  • From the list of available resolutions, select the resolution you wish to use. (1024 by 768 is recommended, but 800 by 600 is suitable as well) Your screen resolution will change instantly.
  • Close the Monitors window.
Congratulations. You are done.

Note: The size of your monitor and the type of video card you have determines how high you can raise your resolution. If you have a 15" or, in some cases, a 17" monitor, images may become blurred if the screen area is larger than 800 by 600. Simply adjust the screen area until you are satisfied with the image quality. A screen area of 800 by 600 is standard for 15" monitors and some 17" monitors.  Most 17" and all 19" or larger monitors can go higher.
